When it comes to film production, it is a foregone conclusion, getting from storyboard through the principal photography process is in itself, a huge accomplishment. Notwithstanding, the battle has only just begun. Now comes the tedious task of post-production. This my friend is when it all comes together… We hope! The four words that is hated by any editor with his or her salt, “Fix it in Post.” It’s like hearing the mechanic say, “We need to take a look at the pistons”. Obviously no easy task, nor cheap. I have but one goal while on the set, add as little to the “fix it in post” list as possible. There will be plenty to fix without creating other added issues.
Sound sweeting, color timing and of course the assembly process takes more than its fair share of time. Add special effects and the time sitting in front of Final Cut is quantified by a factor of one hundred. When completed, I will have seen the production just shy of a million times. Exaggeration? Yes, but, not by much. Since finishing Rock Bottom, I have seen the film maybe twice, since. It all looks like work to me. We should have done this, or we should have done that. That being said, I’m sure that when Angels Wings is finished, I won’t be watching that production more than a couple of times either. For sanity purposes we move on to the next production, leaving yesterday’s production far behind, save for the casual educational prattle over a cup of coffee with friends.
I will say this; we will have a rather comprehensive behind-the-scenes video and pictorial coming soon. For those who have film production coursing through their veins, this should be quite enjoyable. Until the next post… Ciao for now.
Independent filmmaker is another way of saying “Must Be All Things”. Today I’m the props painter, I’m working diligently with the art department… Or should I say, I am the the art department… At least for today I am. Angels Wings is still three and half weeks away but, it seems as though time is traveling quite a bit faster as principal photography draws near.
The colors for Angels room are all designed around a secretary hutch that was purchased for the project. Since it is a real cool piece of furniture it was decided that we keep the color of said green hutch and design the color pallet around the monstrosity. I don’t think there are many 9 year old girls that would honestly appreciate the greeness of it all but, who’s asking, right? All in all, if there is one thing hate most, it’s painting. I think I’d rather be hand digging an olympic size swimming pool. I cannot seem to paint anything without getting paint every where and on every thing and my job has only begun. The bed has to be painted, the table has to be painted, the rocker has to be painted, the toy chest has to be painted and of course, the set has to be painted. You can see where I’m going with this; straight into what seems like a never ending bucket of paint.
Please, if there is someone out there that has a God given love affair with paint, by all means, give me a call… Till then, you’ll know where I’ll be.
As we’re just now forming Matchlight Films, the tasks at hand can be a bit overwhelming. As soon as one task is crossed off the list, five more rear their ugly heads. I’ve been working with Redrock Micro obtaining the camera rig, mattebox and follow focus assemblies and I can tell you from the front row seat, not an easy endeavor. While all parts are in an assembled, there is still a few more to go. I’ll be quite happy when I’m done with that little chore.
When we finished “Rock Bottom”, I think it was then, we, as in Phillip and Timothias and I, decided we should go into the filmmaking biz. I say Biz lightly. After 30 years in the “Biz” I can honestly attest to the fact, there really isn’t much Biz in the Biz, unless one finds a real strong niche’ in the Biz. Our niche’… Ministry based short films. However, I think ministry may be a bit strong. Maybe we’re more into the inspirational, challenging type ministerial stories. Ya that’s the ticket… I’ll go with that for now.
September 14th is quickly coming upon us. This is the day we film “Angels Wings”, another one of our short film ministry type pieces. The sets are being designed and built by Golden Rule Remodeling, here in Salem, the warehouse space is being prepped and the lightng package is being put together. Kind of… Ha ha… Still a long ways to go. I picked up another lens yesterday, a 28mm 2.8f which seems to be a real nice piece of glass. A little slow but, for the motion picture stuff we’re doing, not too bad. The week coming up will be full of entertaining snafu’s, I’m sure. We’ll deal with those just like all the others. Hands in our faces and weeping like babies… Kidding of course. Till the next time, ciao for now.
